aboutus

Started in 2014, The Gentle Art is created to fulfil a gap in teaching the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

We are an academy that truly cares; we aim to help foster a spirit of community where families can pick up a new sport together; kids build lifelong friendships with their training partners; where we can all rely on one another, just like family.

“Singapore's Top Competitive Kids BJJ academy"

- Jiu-Jitsu magazine

The Gentle Art Academy is a school that is looking to revolutionize training by taking a highly academic approach to teaching Jiu-Jitsu. We hope to make the academy the Harvard school of Jiu-Jitsu, where there is a disciplined and thorough approach to teaching, a comprehensive syllabus which ensures strong basics and a proper progression up the layers of complexity.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is the art of using ground fighting techniques to neutralise an opponent through joint locks and choke holds. BJJ is unique as a martial art in that while it doesn’t teach or encourage striking, it has proven to be one of the most effective forms of combat and is the foundation of many top level Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters.

NO-GI

NOGI, also known as grappling, is the gi-less variation of the highly effective martial arts Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). It is often considered as the more dynamic and physical martial art form in comparison to traditional BJJ, requiring just as much precision in the moves as the latter.

Kids BJJ

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is safe and fun way to teach kids:

  • Self Defense

  • Confidence

  • Problem Solving Skills

  • Life Skills

BJJ’s emphasis on grappling means that your little ones can focus on learning the basic moves of BJJ in a safe environment under the guidance of championship-winning coaches. The children's curriculum is also developed with the guidance of early childhood experts to ensure that it is tailored to the unique learning capabilities of each age group.

Audra Low, mother of Gabriella “Gabby” Chua

What we liked about The Gentle Art was that the curriculum focused on character building, problem solving, and self-defense. We also observed that the classes were conducted in a fun, supportive, and iterative manner. Gabby has a matured as a person, specifically in being a better teammate and being more responsible.

The best part about The Gentle Art is the welcoming and family-friendly community. This is evident in the variety of classes offered,  the warmth of the coaches, and quality of the members they attract. The kids program is top-notch, the coaches are very patient and able to explain the techniques in a way that kids can understand.

The Noorishams

Apart from progressing technically in BJJ, through competitions and training, my boys developed very good focus, resilience, discipline and determination. The coaches have been amazing, constantly listening to my concerns and expectations and working with me closely in the best interests of my boys not just in BJJ, but in other aspects of life too.
